  Welcome to Markham Rugby
Markham Rugby Football Club provides competitive rugby programs for all age groups. Started in 1980, the club has continued to develop and expand the programs offered to it's members. We now offer two men’s teams as well as Grey Hares and Women’s rugby.

The junior program offers instructional and competitive teams from Under 12 to Under 20 and continues to flourish each year. The program has been so successful that players come from Toronto, Newmarket, Stouffville, Richmond Hill and other locations to play for Markham. Download the Junior Club Brochure.

Annual General Meeting (AGM) 2009

Wednesday December 30th, 7:00 pm at the Clubhouse

Men defeat Waterloo 22-18.

Saturday Sept 26th: It was a nice way to finish the season.  The crowd gathered and the players were ready. All that was left was to finish the season on a high note by defeating Waterloo.  Markham got off to a great start when Gavin Howe carried the ball over the line for the first try 3 minutes into the game. Waterloo was not about to give up and scored to tie the game barely 10 minutes in. Dave McCartney placed a nice penalty kick between the posts to give Markham a 3 point lead. Minutes later Mike DeVries scored a try converted by Dave McCartney to give Markham a 15-5 lead at half time.  The second half was looking a little worrisome as Waterloo scored two unconverted tries to tie the game early in the second half.  Markham refused to allow Waterloo to come back and scored a final try by Gavin Howe converted by Dave McCartney to take the lead. Waterloo managed a penalty kick but it was not enough and Markham took the win.  The T. Scottish defeated Brantford but Brantford finishes ahead of Markham on bonus points.

Men tie Brantford 12-12.

Saturday Sept 19th: The Men's team started out with a great first half. Good ball control and some great runs by the backs and hard drives by the forwards staked Markham to a 12-0 lead at the half. Unfortunately, mistakes in the second half allowed Brantford back into the game with a try about 5 minutes into the half and a second try at almost full time to tie the game.  Markham tries were scored by Dylan Stewart and Scott Deacon.  Waterloo is next on Saturday Sept 26th at Markham 11:30 am KO.

U18 men WIN Provinicial Championship. Finish season 12-0 !

Sunday Sept 13th: Markham RFC U18 Men's team competed in the Ontario Provincial Rugby Championships this past weekend with 2 games at Fletcher's Fields.

Game 1 pitted Markham against the Georgian Bay Titans. Georgian Bay gave Markham one of its hardest games all year and the rematch was sure to be very competitive. Markham's Dylan Warford opened the scoring six minutes into the game and Markham was in flight. Edward Brown's try from eight meters out was next and Scott Miller's try just before half sent Markham to a half-time lead of 15-0. The second half began with a Brett Mittman try and Tyler Neil's 70 yard scamper was all Markham would need, winning 25-0.

Game 2, the Provincial Championship, saw Markham take on the Ottawa area champions, the Bytown Blues. The Blues featured a big, powerful team to challenge Markham. Bytown dominated early on, pressing towards to Markham's goal, but a quick turnover, crisp passing and a 65 yard run by Brett Mittman put Markham on the board first, followed by a Jesse Lofthouse convert. Tyler Neil's try a few minutes later and a Jesse Lofthouse try before the half powered Markham to a 17-0 lead. In the second half, Bytown came on strong and their converted try 9 minutes in gave them renewed energy. They pressed toward the Markham goal, but a very determined Markham defence stopped Bytown on 4 separate pushes by Bytown. A 70 yard scamper by AJ Zumpano then gave Markham the final stop they would need. Markham took the final score 24-7 to capture the Ontario Championship.

Markham's undefeated season ended with a 12-0 record and the uniqueness of never being behind in any game this season. Coaches Ian McLeod and Leon Racine deserve a lot of credit, but if asked, they would say this is a very competitive group of young rugby players, that really enjoy the game and playing together as a team.

U14 boys win 10 a-side tournament.

Sunday Sept 13th: Markham U14's finished their season in fine form, winning the year ending ten a side tournament.  The squad qualified for the finals by winning their own regional tournament in early September.  The squad defeated Alliston Timberwolves, then beat arch-rivals Aurora Barbarians.  Playing in the finals on Sunday, Markham demolished Mississaugua Blues 56-10.  They followed this up with a trouncing of Ottawa based Barrhaven Scottish, 48-0.

Tries by the bucketload were scored by Jacob Langevin, Andrew Coe, Ryan Ye, Brandon Busato, Connor Rose and Robbie Wingrove.  Congratulations squad on a great effort and an excellent season!

Men fall to Scottish in the first round.

Saturday Sept 12th: The men took to the field on Saturday in the first round of the McCormick Cup.  While the men played much better than the score indicated, the first half must have been very frustrating. The guys consistently made good plays and moved the ball up the field only to turn the ball over on a poor pass, bad dicision or penalty.  The first half was owned by the Ref with calls that were uncomprehendable. The first half ended with the Scottish holding a 23-0 lead over Markham.  The second half showed what Markham was capable of.  A few words from the coach and inspiration from the leaders and Markham came out hard in the second half. They were quickly rewarded with a Penalty Kick by Dan Kostuch followed shortly after with try by Dan Kostuch !  The Scottish managed to recover and scored a penalty kick followed by a try.  The Markham men were not about to roll over and came back with another try scored by Dylan Weston in his first game with the men's team.  The Scottish came back to score another try to even the second half scoring at one PK and two trys each.  The Scottish played well and deserved the win but the final 36-13 score did not reflect the game. Considering the Scottish are a Marshall Premiership League team, the men did very well.  Now, if we can build on the game to take Brantford ....

The next game is Brantford vs Markham at home - 11:30 am Sat Sept 19th - Austin Drive.

Men's 2nds complete an almost perfect season 14-0 !

Saturday August 29th: The men's teams traveled to Oshawa for the final game of the regular season.  Markham was facing it's toughest challenge of the season.  Oshawa was in first with a 10-3 record, same as Markham 1sts but with more bonus points.
Markham 2nds
The 2nds took to the field looking to complete a perfect season. Markham came out strong and put Oshawa under constant pressure. Alex Koppel missed a penalty kick the first minute into the game but Markham would not quit and came back again and again only to be turned away by Oshawa, penalty inside 5M, turnover out of touch, attempted drop kick wide by Colin Campbell Jr., forward pass.  Finally David Morassut was able to break through the Oshawa defence and Markham was on the board 7-0 with the convert by Alex Koppel. Minutes Later Alex Koppel broke the line to score a try but missed the convert. Oshawa managed to break through the Markham line and scored a quick converted try. Markham answered with two more unconverted trys by Ryan Kennedy and Tyler Robbins before the half to take a 22-7 lead at half time. The second half was much tighter with both sides displaying strong defence. The only scoring in the 2nd half was a Markham penalty kick made by Dan Kostuch.  Final score was 25-7.  Markham Men's 2nds finish the season with an incredible 14-0 season. They only missed one bonus point during the entire season.  WELL DONE BOYS !

The 1sts were looking forward to a battle with Oshawa ... but Oshawa proved too strong for Markham up the middle. Oshawa scored a converted try 5 minutes into the game. Markham replied with an unconverted try by Mario Listro after some good hard work by Markham. Oshawa responded with three more trys before half time and left the field with a 24-5 lead at half time. The second half was a much closer affair. Markham tighened up the defence and managed a try by Mike Bell but Oshawa continued to score as well.  Final score was 32-10 Oshawa over Markham. Oshawa retains first place and Markham stays in third place with a 10-4 record for the season.  A huge improvement over 2008.  Something to build on for next year.

The schedule for the McCormick cup should be out this week.

Markham Men's U18 take the Toronto Rugby Cup Championship !

Wednesday August 26th: The Men's U18 side took to the field on Wednesday to challenge Lindsay for the U18 Cup Championship. Markham was quick off the mark and scored their first try within minutes of the kick off. A good fake, a hole opened in the Lindsay defence and Markham never looked back. Great support and several off loads and Markham was across the try line.  Markham continued the strong running up the middle while the backs constantly found holes in the Lindsay defence.  By half time Markham had a huge lead and there was no doubt about the ouotcome of the game. Lindsay already looked like a defeated team. The final was 44-17.

There may be a Ontario U18 championship. One possible date is Sunday Sept 13th at Fletcher's.  Keep checking here for updates.

Markham Women finish a strong season.

Saturday Aug 22nd: Markham women had a very good season and finished 2nd in the league, won both their quarter final and semi-final playoff games and were finalists in the championship. Markham Ladies lost a close game to Belleville by 15-12. Belleville played a strong first half and led 15 points to nil at the half. Markham stormed back in the 2nd half  with 2 tries by Ashley White one of which was converted by Alexandra Grant. The final whistle blew (much to Belleville's relief) with Markham pressing hard for another score. It was a strong season for the women.

U14's show great gains during the season but fall short in the playoffs.

Saturday Aug 22nd: The Markham Rugby Club's u14 season ended on a disappointing note at Fletcher's Fields on Saturday.  Due to an unfortunate playoff draw, the Markham squad's late season surge went unrewarded, as they faced a very solid Aurora Barbarians squad.  The Barbs set the tone early, and dominated loose play, particularly around the rucks.  They converted this dominance into three tries (one converted), including a questionable one in the corner to round out the first half.  Markham had some opportunities, but failed to convert, and halftime score stood 17-0.  Markham, as has been there way all season dug deep, and began to carry play in the second half.  Several sequences had potential, and number eight Patrick Matthews finally dragged the Barbs pack into the end zone for Markham's only try.  Andrew Coe converted. Barbs scored once more, giving a final score of 22-7.  Congratulations to all our players who improved by leaps and bounds from the first game of the year!

Other results: Mens 2nds defeated Lindsay (default ?) and the 1sts defeated Lindsay 18-8
